One of those 17th Century explorers, fur trader Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle sailed his ship Le Griffon from Niagara to Green Bay, WI. It was the first ship to sail the Great Lakes, but was lost on it’s return to Niagara. The fate of the ship is unknown, and it was another 80 years before another vessel braved the expansive waters.
